The recently re-branded Brussels Airport Zaventem (BRU) proudly markets itself as a gateway into the very heart of Europe and lies next to the municipalities of Brucargo, Melsbroek, Nossegem, Steenokkerzeel and also Zaventem. Dating back as far as the First World War, Brussels Zaventem Airport was actually built by the German army which was currently occupying the Evere and Haren area and soon after was taken over by the Belgian military. Before long it was decided to develop this spot further, since the city's current civil airport within the municipality of Hence was both over stretched and inadequate. The existing wooden structure was replaced in the late 1940s by a more substantial passenger terminal and several years later Brussels Airport (BRU) was connected to the city centre via a railway line.
